Meet our Early Stage Researchers: Waqas Ahmad from Mid Sweden University

Tell something about ywaqas_ahmadourself?

My name is Waqas Ahmad, from Islamabad, Pakistan. I received my Bachelor and Master degree in Electronic engineering from Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad campus in 2008 and 2012 respectively.

My research interest mainly lies in image processing and video coding. I have worked in projects on biometric based identification system and quality selective high efficiency video coding.

I like travelling, learning new languages and music. I also like to play cricket and football.

Why did you apply to ETN-FPI project?

The offered research project has combination of video coding and light field imaging system which have already gained significant attention in research and industrial communities. Moreover, training under reputed universities and industrial partners has also intrigued me to pursue my PhD research in such interesting and challenging topic under ETN-FPI project.

What kind of expectations do you have for your research project and network training?

I would like to advance my skills during the course of this project. Being the part of video compression team, I hope the results of my project will contribute in overall system, since the efficient compression will enable ways for real-time imaging and also it reduces the installation cost of archive systems. I expect the planned multidisciplinary training program will provide the early stage researchers every opportunity to achieve the best outcome from this project.

Waqas Ahmad is based in Mid Sweden University 2016-2019, and his research project “Computationally Efficient Lightfield Compression” is linked to Work package 2.

Meet our Early Stage Researchers: Sergio Moreschini from Tampere University of Technology

sergio_moreschiniTell something about yourself?

My name is Sergio Moreschini, from the “Eternal city”: Rome, Italy. I received the Bachelor degree, Laurea in Electronic Engineering in 2012 and the Master degree, Laurea Magistrale in Information and Communication Technology Engineering in 2016, both from University of Roma Tre. During the Master Degree I studied in Tampere University of Technology where I also performed my Master Thesis.

My main interests are in image and video processing. My favorite hobbies are traveling and playing football.

Why did you apply to ETN-FPI project?

I really think that this project is an outstanding chance for a person to grow humanly and professionally. Having the possibility to work in a research environment based both on academic and non-academic entities was exactly what I was looking for.

What kind of expectations do you have for your research project and network training?

My greatest expectation is to see my work as part of the daily lives of people. I also expect to be part of a team with different background, created to accomplish the best possible results to build the bases of the next-generation image and video representation.

Sergio Morechini is based inTampere University of Technology 2016-2019, and his research project “Enhanced lightfield representation for continuous-parallax content” is linked to Work package 2.

Meet our Early Stage Researchers: Luca Palmieri from Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel

luca_palmieriTell something about yourself?

I am Luca Palmieri, from the beautiful island of Venice, north of Italy. I pursued both my Bachelor’s and my Master’s Degree at the University of Padua, respectively in Information Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering, spending one year in the Polytechnic University of Barcelona during my Master enrolled in the Erasmus Program.

My studies now are focused mainly on Computer Vision with a keen interest 3D Reconstruction of the scene, while I try to have some times to travel around the world as much as possible, learn new languages and meet new people; as a hobby I play soccer since I was a little kid.

Why did you apply to ETN-FPI project?

I wanted to continue my studies in the research area I am interested, and the proposal matched exactly my expectations. Moreover, being a European project involving several universities in different countries assures a solid infrastructure and a wide network for the researcher participating in the project that is crucial for reaching the objectives.

What kind of expectations do you have for your research project and network training?

I really hope to achieve some important results that could be of some use in my specific area of the scientific community and at the same time build connections with many different researchers with different background to form a heterogeneous team in order to gain the expertise needed to create something valuable in the future.

Luca Palmieri is based in Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel 2016-2019, and his research project “Efficient metric surface reconstruction and motion analysis from microlens-based plenoptic images” is linked to Work package 2.

Meet our Early Stage Researchers: Yuan Gao from Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel

yuan_gaoTell something about yourself?

My name is Yuan Gao, coming from China. I received B.E. degree in Intelligent Science and Technology from Xidian University, Xi’an, China in July 2012. Then I obtained M.S. degree in Computer Applied Technology from Peking University, Beijing, China in July 2015.

My research mainly focuses on the computer vision area, e.g., Light Field Rendering, Object Detection, Facial Expression and Gender Recognition etc. In the spare time, I like reading Kung Fu fictions and traveling alone.

Why did you apply to ETN-FPI project?

The most striking point of ETN-FPI is that this project connects the research and industry areas closely, which will conduce to the new revolution in 3D movie and virtual reality (VR) commodity. Also, the research teams from both academic and non-academic sectors are strong. So this project is promising, and I applied for it.

What kind of expectations do you have for your research project and network training?

I hope the outcome of our project will be transferred to VR facilities in the near future. And I also hope the network training will make opportunities to let researchers get together and share experiences.

Yaon Gao is based in Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel 2016-2019, and his research project “Large-scale lightfield capturing and multimodal data fusion for full-parallax imaging” is linked to Work package 1.

Early stage researchers wanted – It’s not too late to apply!

European Training Network on Full-Parallax Imaging (2015-2019), a H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network with 8 beneficiaries and 8 partner organizations from Finland, Sweden, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Hungary and Singapore, is looking for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to work in different research projects. Each ESR will be hired for three years and enrolled into a PhD programme either at the host organisation or local partner university.

ESR positions are currently available at Fraunhofer (Germany), Holografika (Hungary), Tampere University of Technology (Finland) and Raytrix GmbH (Germany).

If you have a suitable MSc degree, less than four years of previous researcher experience and you have not spent more than 12 months during the past three years in the host organisation’s country, this is your chance to become part of the new generation of researchers in the area of full parallax imaging!

For further details on each ESR positions, please check the Jobs section. More information available on the Marie Skolodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network here.
